Restricted and Prohibited Burning Periods

Dates are inclusive. Please contact your local Fire Control Officer to obtain a Permit to Burn during the restricted burning periods. Current contact details for the brigades can be found here. 

  • 1st October 2023 to 31 October 2023: Restricted Burning Period.  Permits to burn are required.
  • 1st November 2023 to 14th March 2024: Prohibited Burning Period.  No burning is permitted.
  • 15th March 2024 to 15th April 2024: Restricted Burning Period.  Permits to burn are required.
  • Easter 29th March 2024 - 1 April 2024: Burning prohibited

Harvest and Vehicle Movement Bans and Total Fire Bans

Harvest and Vehicle Movement Bans
On days of high fire danger, the Shire may impose a Harvest and/or Vehicle Movement Ban. When one of these Bans has been imposed, you cannot conduct any harvesting activity or operate anything powered by an internal combustion engine on land with vegetation.

The Shire of Broomehill-Tambellup has been split into two zones for the purpose of imposing harvest bans and mopping up operations. The zones are known as EASTERN ZONE and WESTERN ZONE, with the boundary between the two zones being the Great Southern Highway. Any harvest ban imposed on a specific zone will also include both townsites by default. Please refer to the map below for more information.

Total Fire Bans

A Total Fire Ban (TFB) is declared by the Department of Fire & Emergency Services on days when fires are most likely to threaten lives and property. This is because of predicted extreme fire weather or when there are already widespread fires and firefighting resources are stretched.

Occasionally TFBs may be declared outside of a fire season (such as in May or June) due to other factors such as higher temperatures and expected strong winds preceding a storm front.

This Ban prohibits any activity likely to cause a fire but does not include agricultural activities. To find out if a Total Fire Ban is in place visit Emergency WA .

Recorded message noting bans in place in the Shire. The Shire’s Harvest Ban Hotline is updated as soon as information is received and should be used as a reliable source of information.

SMS Emergency Notification Service
The shire uses an SMS notification system to communicate updates on emergencies, road closures, harvest and vehicle movement bans and any other advice as required. Please contact the Shire office on 08 9825 3555 to request addition to the free service, or email mail@shirebt.wa.gov.au providing your full name and mobile number. 

      

Please do not rely on only one method of advice for Harvest Ban notification. A number of areas of the Shire have limited mobile reception. SMS messaging is not always an effective form of notification. 

If you feel weather conditions are deteriorating but have not received advice of a ban through text message or radio broadcast, please contact your Brigade Fire Control Officer or check the Harvest Ban Hotline.

Annual Property Compliance Inspections
Officers authorised under the Bush Fire Act 1954 will be conducting inspections prior to and during the fire season to ensure compliance. Officers and contractors can legally enter your property for this purpose.
