Proposed Council Policy - Camping and Temporary Accommodation
Published on Wednesday, 3 June 2026 at 1:22:55 PM
The policy follows changes to State Government legislation in late 2024 which granted local government the ability to approve permits for camping and temporary accommodation on privately-owned land.
The newly adopted policy provides for permits for:
• Short-term camping of up to 28 days,
• Temporary accommodation while building a house.
The policy includes minimum conditions that aim to protect the amenity of neighbours, ensure correct and safe waste disposal, and minimise the risk to life posed by bushfires.
The new policy provides a practical approach to camping and temporary accommodation, which balances increased freedoms for landowners while addressing the potential issues unfettered camping could create.
Please forward any comments in regard to the proposed policy to drs@shirebt.wa.gov.au or phone 9825 3555 for further information. Public consultation closes 24 June 2026.
